Hey Speck...
I just read your review of The Red Tent, and I have to say I had the same kind of reaction to it. The entire time I was thinking it just seemed like a good excuse for the author to get some of her man-hating rage out, but then at the same time I felt a little guilty for even feeling that way about it. I didn't even see the author's picture until I saw your page though, and I'm glad I didn't because then I would have had her image in my head during the entire time reading it! I read it after my mom gave a copy of it to me for Christmas last year.

Yeh, they're lucky fictional characters can't sue for slander.

Besides that and chopping the chronology a bit (all the chopping made sense, though, as far as adapting for the screen) and tweaking the action some, I thought it was perfect. Two thumbs and two big toes up.

Smeagol was perfect, he wasss.....NO! He was weak, letting the nasty hobbittses steal my precioussss......

Faramir did get screwed. Beautiful movie, very well done. It's nice when something puts the magical fire back into life, and you walk out of the theater alive again.

Heh! De-mented. Nice Elvish breakdown.

The Two Towers rocked, despite the few points where a little double take was necessary. Faramir got screwed, in my opinion. Was that spoiler-free enough? I don't want to say too much before everybody who wants to has seen it.

Anybody have a gift idea for Chris? *banging head on gingerbread'n'candy cane wall of doom*

For the Forumina: http://lotr.fistfulayen.com/. It's happened. You didn't think it could, but it did. Hobbit Rap.

What else can I say? This is actually GOOD.

Vicki, anyone who, without missing a beat, can reference Dr. Who, Leela and K-9 without sounding geeky or uncool (notice the 'or' there) is deserving of respect.

*sigh*

They don't make Dr. Who type programming like they used to, though I hear "Red Dwarf" is pretty good.

haha, no problem, jimmy. what i thanked you for was telling me how much space i was taking up. i'm simple minded so my needs are simple. [g] i'm looking at my file now in FTP Explorer, trying to bumble my way to a total, but with my general incompetence, i can envision one false move deleting the entire thing. heh. if i can't figure it out, then i'll just pester you every whipstitch. (joke!)

'mistress' to me inevitably conjures up K-9 and Leela and Dr. Who. kind of a kicky association. 'Domina' sounds cool.

oh, enough of me. thanks again.

LOL Jimmy, I like "Forumina." Though it sounds like a bird.

...The daytime call of the forumina (L., blogger forumitis) resembles a string of avian expletives, interspersed with recognizable words like "archive" "template" and "fuck me, it's broken again!" Though the forumina may appear to be speaking in a human language, don't be tempted into arguing with it, because it could go on all afternoon.

I am trying to survive 15 more minutes until I depart to see The Two Towers, (a slack achievement dampened by having asked my boss for permission to scarp off early) but I will return with a spoiler-free review later tonight or tomorrow.

Hey, that tagline is the czarina's call. The forum meisterina. Hey...what's the feminine form of "master"? "Mistress" sounds too weird to me. Or is the feminine form just "master"? Is she the "dominatrix"? Something trix? Fortrix? Forumina?
Clubtrix?

As far as techie talk, speck, it's not you. It's me. I've noticed lately that I have no idea how to express the simplest things without making them sound super-complicated, and I often make no sense at all. *embarrassed* I've read short stories of mine from a few years ago, completely flushed and sweaty because they make ABSOLUTELY NO FRIGGIN' SENSE. Well. I mean, they make perfect sense to me, but what about everyone else?

Ah well. Knowing this is supposed to be half the battle

well, jimmy - you could change the tagline to "say what?"
maybe vague was better...
i get lost in your computer geeky descriptions of how to do stuff and then I start to feel insecure that the world is leaving me behind and that I'll die sad and alone and technologically unadvanced. sheesh! but you know what the really funny part of all this is? that my job is giving out tech grants to the community clinics in california. And I'm so woefully unversed in technology. sigh. oh well. at least the clinics don't know that. and really, I don'thave to understand how to set up their systems, I just need to understand if THEY know how to do it....
or something like that.

Sheesh, could I be more vague? Sorry Vicki. I didn't actually tell you how to do it, because I don't know. The way I set it up, when you log in, it drops you directly into a directory located at www.xenius.org/html/vicki . (The html is not expressed in the address because the server is mapped differently, so for practical purposes it is www.xenius.org/vicki.)

In general, Windows allows you to see the properties of a file (file size, location, etc..) when you've right-clicked it and selected "properties" from the list. You could do this, but since you're IN the file and not above it, there really isn't anything to right-click. More importantly, your ftp program might let you view the properties of the directory you're in, depending upon what you're using.

Internet Explorer makes a great ftp program if you want to use something "familiar" (assuming you're on a PC running Windows). It will treat the xenius ftp site as though you are simply navigating around your own computer, and thus you'll have all of your old tricks available to you. If you are not using IE as an ftp proggie already, and need to know how to do it, let me know. It's really really easy.

The way I build my portion of xenius is by mirroring exactly the xenius file paths and structures on my own computer. I basically have xenius on my c drive, and use this to figure out what's going on. Whenever a file is uploaded to xenius.org/jimmy, it is always in harmony with a file on my computer that exists at c://...projects/xenius/jimmy. If I want to know how large my portion of xenius is, I can get a basic idea by looking at its twin.

Sorry I didn't answer your question and pretended I did. I hate when people do that. Check your ftp program to see if it behaves like Explorer. There is a good chance that it does, and in this case any tricks you use on your drive should be available to you.

Eschew obfuscation, or something like that! Viva la ease of use!

Vicki, you are currently using a mere 2.9 megabytes. If we were to divide the xenius space evenly among ALL users, everyone would get something on the order of 40 or 50 megs, however most of us don't need that much, and some of us do not intend to use our space at all.

Um. It's me that's the culprit as far as space goes. I'm using something ridiculously huge. You don't even want to know.

Remote Viewing.

Heh. I inquired about their program today. They're only a short drive away from me. The government shelled out 20 million dollars for remote viewing programs during the Cold War and perhaps earlier, and in 1995 this information was declassified. It's interesting, and I"m definitely curious. If the government was willing to try it out, was it out of desperation or the knowledge that it was succesful? I doubt they'd spend so much money on a hoax; and Russia was doing it too.

hi, everyone. i'm here & reading, just not saying much. (be glad! [g]) i'd like to ask a technical question, because i'm so ignorant. jimmy, how can i tell how many *gigabytes* of stuff (heh) i have stored in my folder on xenius? how do i know if i'm using more space than i have any right to use? i don't want to abuse the system.

ok, i'll be quiet again. happy happy holidays to one & all!

The Five of Swords is usually about some kind of defeat, signifying a situation where retreat is the best solution. I placed a glow around the head of the 'victim', because that is where I wanted the focus to go. Because the situation is usually a product of a state of mind, and peace will come through a transformation of perspective. The swords are by far the most horrible of the cards in the tarot. But human beings suffer, and the cards are meant to reflect the spectrum of human experience. Hopefully the recipient of the reading can see the hint of hope in the messages.

Nice colours on the tarot Anna. What does the five of swords signify? Something good I hope.

Went to meeting of Bookcrossing last week. Not very well attended but a start in London. One lady had brought 2 books along. Just finished reading the one I had received. Will release in the wild tomorrow. A good theoritical idea but not sure it'll work out in practise. Will be releasing some of my own books soon - but only the ones I don't really want. And there lies the rub. People will only release books that they don't want. I don't think anyone will release their only copy of TLOTR for instance.

2003 approaches fast. Get your resolutions in folks! Christmas this year is a very low key affair. Amazing the number of people who feel Christmas has come too soon after the last one. Is time speeding up?
